Delicious Pizza is a nationwide company focusing on pizza. It offers a wealth of pizza, pasta, snacks, with the service of online ordering special offers. Pizza is all hand-made and the company promises that the order must be delivered within 30 minutes. The employee interviewed Wang Lin is an overseas college student who chose to deliver pizza as a part-time job in the company Delicious Pizza. This essay presents an analysis of communication issues in the organization.
Methodology
In the process of selecting the interviewee, it uses the research questions as a guideline. The interviewees are supposed to provide enough information about the problem. Based on the conceptual framework of the research, some specific indicators are used to separate the subjects, usually using demographic, geographic, or experiential indicators.
For example, the report is studying the intercommunication issues, and then it is needed to further refine the research object as an overseas student. The individual face-to-face in-depth interview is to improve understanding of personal experiences and perspectives over some problems (Dicicco-Bloom, & Crabtree 2006, p.314). In fact, in this process, based on existing indicators and questionnaire surveys, the interviewee and form are decided.
But the interviewee at first declined the invitation, which was persuaded to participate. The persuasion is to give the recipient a motivation to change his attitude or opinion with a certain stimulus and to act according to the intended intention of the other side. Happy research subjects tend to question less the content of a persuasive message (Bless, Bohner, Schwarz, & Strack 1990, p.331).
In the process of persuasion, the short period of time was specified at first. As for the kind of interview techniques that applied, it is chatting freely before the interview, which allows the interviewees to be more comfortable. It is a good idea to start with a more relaxed and uncontroversial issue. When the respondent feels that he is more comfortable, it is easier to choose some questions to challenge him. Analyzing qualitative interviews needs a stage-by-stage process(Burnard 1991, p.461). When the recording or recording equipment is finished, it will be explained clearly with a stage-by-stage analysis.
Finding
Intercultural communication
Wang has encountered problems and difficulties in delivering pizza as a result of the unclear message of address. There are the complexities of language and intercultural communication in various international contexts(Turchina 2015, p.184). When speaking in a non-native language, Wang feels that the language level is not high. It will create pressure and anxiety, and it will be easier to have confusion and error in communication and even avoid the necessary clarifications and corrections.
Persuasion
When Wang can not find the exact place to deliver the pizza, he convinced the customer to wait for a longer period of time until he figured out the address. A persuasion is a form of influence (Witsel 2008 p.292). He explained sincerely that he was new to the city, making him not familiar with the address.
Negotiations
At first, Wang can only do some chores in the kitchen. Later, he hoped to go out and deliver pizza, which is a good chance for him to practice oral English and know more about the city. Therefore, he reported to his boss that there was a lack of delivery personnel. But the boss declined. Negotiation is a process in which two people share their concerns to reach a mutual benefit (Witsel 2008, p.343). He insisted that he will create an image of diversity in the company, which made his offer accepted by the boss.
Groups OR meetings and discussions (formal and informal)
Generally speaking, there are two kinds of communication channels within the enterprise. The first one is holding meetings and official conversations. Meetings are important to shape norms and work processes (Witsel 2008, p.412). The second one is a formal or private communication, which is preferred by Wang and his colleagues. Word of mouth occupies a key place in interpersonal communication(Berger 2014, p.586).
Trust issues
Wang who uses different languages in different cultures has a very consistent understanding of trust from other employees. Although there is a difference in understanding and building trust, they trust each other because of their responsibility to work.
Discussion
In the era of globalization, communication issues become global as well. There is a failure to define clearly what institutional change is in the context of globalization (Campbell 2004 p.527). Although globalization has existed for a long time, its influence it on the change of the institution is still unclear. The problem of misunderstanding as a result of lack of proper understanding is particularly troublesome in the process of delivering pizzas to customers.
Another main reason for this problem is that awareness indifference in cross-cultural communication has not been enough. Managing diversity is concerned about differences among people which should be encouraged (Witsel 2008, p. 244). Many people in cross-cultural cooperation do not have enough skills and methods to help them overcome related difficulties.
Employees in Delicious Pizza prefer to receive various information from informal ways. Employees from different levels are engaged in making strategies and talk about business needs (Witsel 2008, p.293). Thus, if the company can make reasonable use of informal communication, it can help the business leaders to get access to more information that is not different from the official channel, thereby solving the potential problem.
According to cognitive dissonance theory, persuaders can be more aware of the dissonance of others and employ some measures to restore the consonance (Witsel 2008, p.293). Specifically, getting the other party to accept the information is to make the recipient care and resonate with the content of the other side. Persuasion is to enhance the cohesiveness of the company better.
Without trust, there is no successful enterprise. Negotiation can help improve relationships and reduce stress (Witsel 2008, p. 345). A good and correct negotiation within the enterprise can make all employees feel the happiness and performance of communication directly. Strengthening methods of negotiation can not only make conflict less but also enable ordinary employees to greatly improve work performance, while also enhancing the cohesiveness and competitiveness of enterprises.
Recommendations
Leaders of Pizza Delicious should pay attention to and improve informal communication in order to communicate effectively. People’s influence on opinions is related to both accuracy, and how connectedness in the social network (Demarzo, Vayanos, Zwiebel 2003, p.909). It is recommended to use informal, and face-to-face conversations as much as possible to increase connection among individual employees.
It is important to use vocal messages at key moments, without having to care too much about the perfection of English pronunciation and grammar. When talking with others whose first language is different, it is key to ask what you do not understand (Witsel 2008, p.248). At the same time, it is recommended that Wang should speak slowly when communicating. Then he will have more time to clarify language and questions.
Also, he can use oral and simple English phrases so that the other individuals feel that he totally learns about their point of view. Clarity, courtesy, and correctness are valued everywhere (Witsel 2008, p.269). At the beginning of the communication between the two parties, it is suggested that starting from a kind topic can improve mutual trust.
