Education is the fundamental element that support the continuous development of a country. However, the increasing college fees have shut the door for countless talented young people in recent years. Free college education has been implemented in countries such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany for years. On the other hand, the increasing pressure of college tuition fees has created enormous burdens on the American families, especially the middle class. Even for students enrolled in the universities, the tuition fees and living expenses require to divert the attention on studies to time-consuming part-time jobs. Under the pressure of loans of tuition fees, students no longer focus on pursuing academic achievements and further education. Instead, they rush to get a degree and a well-paid job to pay off the loans. This has created a vicious cycle that must be ended soon. Overall, college education should be free in the US, below are the justifications.

Firstly, free college education is only the inevitability of history. In the earliest times, education was only for nobles and riches, with little attention to the poor and disadvantaged. The development society has changed the situation, establishing the modern education system over centuries. At first, going to all schools need payment of the tuition fees at first. with centuries of development, such practices have long been replaced by free education in America from kindergarten through 12th grade. Such a policy has significantly increased the rate of literacy in the US, promoting the country to become the most powerful one in the world. Therefore, it is only a matter of time that such a policy should extend into tertiary education, under the condition that the living standards and human civilization mover towards the positive directions.

Secondly, a high school diploma, once adequate for a graduate to get a decent job in the 50s and 60s, are no longer of much value anymore. Instead, tertiary education has become the major contributor of talent for the development of the society. There have already been numerous cases where people have changed their fate through getting a college degree, through scholarships and personal efforts. After World War II, free education was granted for more than two million soldiers, many would never have the chance by themselves. As a result, the rapid economic growth experience by America in the decades after the war is closely related to these educated veterans, who had brought vibrancy and driving forces for prosperity.
Lastly, a free college education would mean a fair chance to all members of the society, which proposed a fundamental solution to the problem of inequality. It is only through higher level education that people are able to fully participate in the political, economic and developmental processes that truly matter. Thus, it is no exaggeration to say that education opens doors and break hurdles between different social classes to a certain degree. A free college education, thus, makes the opportunity available to all those who desire a tertiary education but are limited by monetary factors. In a society with high tuition fees, the rich and the poor would be better off with wealth and subsidies respectively. It is the majority of the Americans, the middle class, that are suffering the most. It is simply unfair to privilege only the few at the cost of burdening the majority.

In conclusion, the historical trends, nature of tertiary education, as well as the pursuit for social fairness are strong motivations for a free college education in the US in the near future. This should be done by making more investments in the expansion of educational facilities and resources so that more students are benefited. Moreover, opportunities should prioritize the student who really desire to study and provide alternatives for those who do not, with respective career prospects. As mentioned above, free college education has been implemented successfully in multiple countries in Europe. It is time for the United States to follow and benefit from it as early as possible.
